Championship Trophies

The Stanley Cup

Donated by Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892, the Stanley Cup is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. Unlike most championship trophies, winners keep the Cup only temporarily before passing it to the next champion.

Each player on the winning team gets approximately one day with the Cup, leading to countless legendary stories and celebrations.

The FIFA World Cup

The current trophy, officially called the FIFA World Cup Trophy, has been awarded since 1974. Made of 18-karat gold, it depicts two human figures holding up the Earth.

Brazil permanently retained the original Jules Rimet Trophy after winning it three times, prompting the creation of the current design.

Championship celebration

Vince Lombardi Trophy

Awarded to the Super Bowl champion since 1967, this trophy is named after the legendary Green Bay Packers coach. Unlike the Stanley Cup, a new trophy is made each year, and winners keep their trophy permanently.

Larry O'Brien Trophy

The NBA championship trophy has been named after the former commissioner since 1984. It features a basketball partially entering a net, crafted in sterling silver with 24-karat gold overlay.

Olympic Recognition

Olympic medals carry unique prestige as they represent competition among the world's best athletes on a stage that occurs only once every four years.

Gold

First place, though modern Olympic gold medals contain only about 6 grams of actual gold plating over silver.

Silver

Second place recognition, often accompanied by what psychologists call the silver medal effect of perceived underperformance.

Bronze

Third place, interestingly associated with higher satisfaction than silver due to comparison with not medaling at all.
